Summary

Henry Kissinger analyses how six extraordinary leaders he has known have shaped their countries and the world

'Leaders,' writes Henry Kissinger in this compelling book, 'think and act at the intersection of two axes: the first, between the past and the future; the second between the abiding values and aspirations of those they lead。 They must balance what they know, which is necessarily drawn from the past, with what they intuit about the future, which is inherently conjectural and uncertain。 It is this intuitive grasp of direction that enables leaders to set objectives and lay down a strategy。'

In Leadership, Kissinger analyses the lives of six extraordinary leaders through the distinctive strategies of statecraft which he believes they embodied。 After the Second World War, Konrad Adenauer brought defeated and morally bankrupt Germany back into the community of nations by what Kissinger calls 'the strategy of humility'。 Charles de Gaulle set France beside the victorious Allies and renewed its historic grandeur by 'the strategy of will'。 During the Cold War, Richard Nixon gave geostrategic advantage to the United States by 'the strategy of equilibrium'。 After twenty-five years of conflict, Anwar Sadat brought a vision of peace to the Middle East by a 'strategy of transcendence'。 Against the odds, Lee Kwan Yew created a powerhouse city-state, Singapore, by 'the strategy of excellence'。 Although when she came to power Britain was known as 'the sick man of Europe', Margaret Thatcher renewed her country's morale and international position by 'the strategy of conviction'。

To each of these studies, Kissinger brings historical perception, public experience and - because he knew each of their subjects, and participated in many of the events he describes - personal knowledge。 The book is enriched by insights and judgements such as only he could make, and concludes with his reflections on world order and the indispensability of leadership today。

Let me start this review by saying that I have never read any of the works by Kissinger prior to this book, but I loved his presentation of the six dynamic leaders and how at different times in their leadership careers they exemplified the characteristics of excellent leadership。 While De Gaulle and Thatcher were leaders we normally see in leadership, Kissinger's analysis took a different look at leadership principles than those works I have read in academia。 For instance, I have read research i Let me start this review by saying that I have never read any of the works by Kissinger prior to this book, but I loved his presentation of the six dynamic leaders and how at different times in their leadership careers they exemplified the characteristics of excellent leadership。 While De Gaulle and Thatcher were leaders we normally see in leadership, Kissinger's analysis took a different look at leadership principles than those works I have read in academia。 For instance, I have read research indicating there is evidence to support that Thatcher was not truly a great leader but that she was merely a fall guy for the men in parliament and because of the times she happened to be successful。 Kissinger looks at her on her merits as well as her faults。 This was very refreshing and lent to wanting to read about the other leaders。 Furthermore, I have not read anything concern De Gaulle which indicated there was anything negative in his personality。 It was refreshing to realize he had his faults and he used his faults for the betterment of his country。 He was a man of principle but sometimes the principles led him to make the decision to just not participate。 I thought this is insightful as we are no longer a society that values people who refuse to participate in something against their grain。 I was interested that Lee, Sadat, Nixon, and Adenaur were included。 I am an International Relations and Global Security Scholar and I have never run across literature on Lee or Adenaur。 The introduction to the leadership styles of both was very interesting in the context of the study into the leadership principles and how they were right for their interests at that time in history。 Watergate and PLO aside, Nixon and Sadat are presented as men ahead of their times。 The analysis in the Chapters on both indicates Kissinger believes that should Watergate have not broken and Nixon remained president, Sadat and Meir might have reached a peace treaty that would have changed the course of history in the Middle East。 As a scholar of International Relations and Security, this idea bears further research。 If you are looking for a book to tell you how to be a leader, this is not the book the one you want。 If you are looking for a book to make you think about how you can be more dynamic and which leadership strategies you have liked, this is a wonderful read。 。。。more

Henry Kissinger discusses the leadership policies of six people and puts them into a historical perspective。 Through this methodology, Kissinger makes a lot of observations。 Each leader becomes the epitome of the nation, directing its energies to a new dawn。Kissinger focuses on the events following World War II。 He covers Konrad Adenauer, Charles De Gaulle, Richard Nixon, Anwar Sadat, Lee Kuan Yew, and Margaret Thatcher。 Thanks for reading my review, and see you next time。

Henry Kissinger expounds on the thoughts, philosophies, and actions of Charles DeGaulle, Konrad Adeneaur, Richard Nixon, Anwar Sadat, Lee Kuan Yew, and Margaret Thatcher in order to discuss how they made decisions in the 20th Century that shaped the world of today。 Kissinger had multiple meetings with all these individuals and was able to provide insights into their character and decision-making processes。I thought the book was interesting and well-written, and I learned a lot。

Well argued and compellingly written, Kissinger’s “Leadership” uses the example of six, quite different 20th-century leaders to explore how leaders can pursue long-term objectives, internationally and domestically, and balance competing interests。 Each profiled leader faced unique challenges and confronted them with both vision and a respect for the possible。 For Adenauer, this meant rebuilding international trust in Germany by acceding to Allied demands and atoning for the crimes of the Holocau Well argued and compellingly written, Kissinger’s “Leadership” uses the example of six, quite different 20th-century leaders to explore how leaders can pursue long-term objectives, internationally and domestically, and balance competing interests。 Each profiled leader faced unique challenges and confronted them with both vision and a respect for the possible。 For Adenauer, this meant rebuilding international trust in Germany by acceding to Allied demands and atoning for the crimes of the Holocaust。 For de Gaulle, it meant restoring French confidence in their country’s greatness by creating a national myth of universal resistance to the Germans, ending the Algerian War, and charting its own path through the Cold War (e。g。, rejecting NATO troops on French soil, developing France’s own nuclear deterrent)。 For Nixon, it involved embracing a balance-of-power conception of foreign affairs to pursue detente with Russia, split China from the Soviets, and prevent conflicts in the Middle East and India/Pakistan from spiraling out。 For Anwar Sadat, it meant compromising and inviting backlash from his Arab neighbors and extremists in his own country in pursuit of peace with Israel。 For Lee Kuan Yew, it meant investing in his own people’s economic potential to build Singapore into a thriving economy and overcome ethnic divisions by forging a national identity。 And for Thatcher, it meant changing England’s political paradigm by arresting high inflation, standing up to striking coal miners, delivering economic growth and dynamism, and revitalizing Britain’s leadership on the world stage through both unilateral action (e。g。, the Falklands War) and collaboration with the Americans (e。g。, urging Reagan to negotiate with Gorbachev, defending Britain’s nuclear deterrent)。 Our leaders today could learn a great deal from their examples (with the exception of Nixon’s domestic escapades) as they seek to balance the competing interests and aspirations of China and the US in a multipolar world without running the risk of devastating conflict。 。。。more

Kissinger is uniquely placed to write this account of political leaders in the twentieth century: Konrad Adenauer (served as the first chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany from 1949 to 1963), Charles de Gaulle (President of France who led Free France during World War II), Richard Nixon (37th president of the United States, serving from 1969 to 1974), Anwar Sadat (Egyptian politician and military officer who served as the third President of Egypt), Lee Kuan Yew (served as Prime Minister Kissinger is uniquely placed to write this account of political leaders in the twentieth century: Konrad Adenauer (served as the first chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany from 1949 to 1963), Charles de Gaulle (President of France who led Free France during World War II), Richard Nixon (37th president of the United States, serving from 1969 to 1974), Anwar Sadat (Egyptian politician and military officer who served as the third President of Egypt), Lee Kuan Yew (served as Prime Minister of Singapore between 1959 and 1990), and Margaret Thatcher (Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1990)。 He knew each of them personally, often meeting them as an emissary of the United States during their terms in office, and then staying in touch after their departure。Given the six subjects of this book, it largely deals with statecraft, geopolitics, and military strategy。 There are analogies to corporate leadership, but this is not at all central to the book。 It was my personal fascination with politics/history/philosophy/principles that sustained me through the 420 pages。 The bulk of the book is devoted to granular accounts of the six leader’s performance while serving at the pinnacle of government (as well as the back stories, connections between the six journeys, and detailed accounts from Kissinger’s diaries)。 This is a remarkable modern historical account… It is bookended with broader observations, which distil insight and attempt to project forwards (including very brief reflections on the Ukraine invasion, given that the book was released in July 2022)。 The first page of the introduction is incredibly compelling:“Any society, whatever its political system, is perpetually in transit between a past that forms its memory and a vision of the future that inspires its evolution… Leaders think and act at the intersection of two axes: the first, between the past and the future; the second, between the abiding values and aspirations of those they lead。”The 20-page conclusion is worthy of reading as a standalone essay。 Kissinger reflects on the poor quality of politicians who have been able to navigate upwards during an age of social media, influencers, and instantaneous media commentary:“It is not that changes in communications technology have made inspired leadership and deep thinking about world order impossible, but that in an age dominated by television and the Internet, thoughtful leaders must struggle against the tide。”There is much reflection on the interactions between western allies and Russia during the Cold War。 Kissinger also attempts to frame China’s rise, towards equalling the power of the United States。 He is known for a realist approach to foreign policy, and his discourse feels measured/balanced (considering that he rose to the apex of American society a couple of decades after his Jewish family fled from Nazi Germany in 1938)。 Choosing to include Anwar Sadat appears to be quite deliberate and targeted, considering that he was the first Arab leader to visit Israel officially and that he was subsequently assassinated。This is a deep reading of modern history。 While the thinking is grounded in vested interests (of communities, groups, organisations, and individuals) as well as geography and history, Kissinger elevates the narrative to show how these six leaders (and he himself) were able to inspire their nations through values and vision。 。。。more

The fact that Mr。 Kissinger knew all six of these world leaders in their time, especially Nixon, who Kissinger served as Secretary of State for。 This is like reading a history book by Winston Churchill, who describes many historical events in first person。 Konrad Adenauer, the first and oldest of the leaders described in this book, was the first Chancellor of West German following World War II。 He formed a new German nation that had been ravished by the Second World War and helped reinvent Germany’s image in Europe and the greater wold。 Charles de Gaulle, a virtually unknown minor general, lead the Free French in World War II and largely recreated France, making it a more stable nation than before and instituting Gaullism, a political philosophy that still exists today。 Richard Nixon, the 37th American president who is most remembered for the Watergate Scandal。 Nixon is less remembered for opening China to the world, pulling America out of Vietnam, and reconfiguring Cold War strategy。 Anwar Sadat, the Egyptian leader who pursued peace with Israel, which shocked the Arab world at the time and set in motion further peace in the Middle East between Jews and Muslims。 His strategy is still seen in the modern world with agreements such as the Abraham Accords。 Lee Kuan Yew, the leader of Singapore for three decades。 Lee transformed a former British colony into a multiethnic, respected, and highly developed country。 Margaret Thatcher, the first female Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and Iron Lady, credited with reinvigorating a nation in “retreat”, revitalizing the Anglo-American alliance, and helping end the Cold War。 According to Kissinger, there are two types of leaders: statesmen and prophets。 All of the above, according to Mr。 Kissinger, fall within the statesmen category with occasional tendencies towards prophet。 An example of true prophets would be Gandhi or Lenin。 I found the chapters on Adenauer and Lee to be most interesting, as I knew almost nothing about either one。 I now have high admiration for both, especially what Lee was able to do to Singapore。 I already had high respect for Margaret Thatcher as I admire her political philosophy and what she was able to do to a broken United Kingdom。 I felt that Nixon was the most unlike the others, as he, in my opinion, was the least important of the six。 However, Mr。 Kissinger makes a good augment for Nixon and his leadership abilities。 We see opening China as mistake now, due to the current political environment, but at the time it was done to counter the Soviet Union。 Kissinger notes the Treaty of Westphalia, which ended the 30 years war and set Europe (and ultimately the greater world) on a trajectory towards nation states and modernity。 He describes the two world wars and time in between as the second thirty years war, which is an argument I’ve heard made before and one I agree with, as the world has since again changed。 All of the six in this book were products of the world’s shift from aristocracy from meritocracy, as none came from the upper echelons of society。 The world has changed again, in Kissinger’s view, as meritocracy does not matter in our information driven, highly technological world。 This was the first Kissinger book I read, and I really enjoyed it。 It was dense and too philosophical at times, but I found it valuable and educational。 。。。more
